Speech-language pathology is the treatment of communication disorders that affect speech, language and swallowing.
The speech therapy department offers screenings, diagnosis and treatment for:
- Speech: Articulation, fluency (stuttering) and difficulty forming and sequencing sounds.
- Language: Receptive, expressive, oral and written communication skills.
- Voice: Poor voice quality, reoccurring laryngitis, voice abuse or misuse, esophageal speech, electro larynx training, and dysphonia (difficulty voicing).
- Swallowing: VitalStim therapy (electrical stimulation to improve swallowing), DPNS (deep pharyngeal neuromuscular stimulation), oral and throat exercises, modified barium swallow studies (x-ray for accurate diagnosis of swallowing problem), diet and safety recommendations, and tongue thrust remediation.
- Cognitive-linguistic skills: Alzheimer’s functional maintenance programs and functional ADL (activities of daily living) and skills training (such as balancing checkbook, paying bills and making appointments).
- Pragmatic: Ability to use language appropriately within cultural expectations.
